LAN Parties

Does anyone here host any lan parties? I'm playing with the idea of building a server and giving the kids around here a place and a way to play against eachother. We are in an area that it's hard to get broadband and most homes are still dial up and I have been asked many times about playing games online. What I'm looking for is information on how much is involved in hosting these parties for kids. It would also give them something to do around here. With it being just the younger crowd. (under 18) and daylight hours only could you get away with just setting up and letting them play and then just hanging out and making sure they follow respectable rules and that? I don't want to get into this as a money thing. Just a small cost to cover the overhead.

I thought I would post this in the community section because that is where I felt it fit since it isn't to benifit anyone except the kids. They would decide as a group what is played and what is used.

I run lan games for me and my mates and usually do it over an afternoon. The problem we have is getting the computers to the location, setting them up (getting WinXP to see 98 and XP can be difficult for non-techies).

It works quite well, but remember you have lots of different machines and different speeds - games will run slowly on some and fly on others.

Letting the kids choose the games, nah, bad idea. Put various popular games of various ages on offer such as Quake III, UT2k3, UT, C&C Tib Sun, C&C Generals, Toca2, Colin McRae2/Rally Champ Xtreme, GTA II and let them play from the list.

I wish you luck, setting that up for kids could be a nightmare.
