Well, I first used an older copy of "drive copy"...Dumb me, it only shows 7.8 gigs of 9.1 in windows because drivecopy doesnt go larger than that in its partitions. I know i can update drivecopy, but ive already sold the old drive. I also want just one partition;I dont want to create another with just 1 gig...so..just curious if my cd backups will work on my new HD so i can just Fdisk, and get the partition right on mmy own.
Thanks all!

Well steveakaflash...you sure don't give much info...When you don't, its hard for anyone to answer any questions. What OS are you using? If win95b-c or win98 you don't even need anything other than a boot disk to fdisk and format the HD. Simply boot from the floppy then fdisk with large disk support and then format and all will be fine.

Steve,
let me see if i got this right.....you used an "old" image of your system and it only created a partition of 7.8 gig out of your "new" 9 gig harddrive. But you want to have the whole 9 gigs as 1 partition.....well if you FDISK and then format the drive as 1 partition and still "image" the drive with your "old" backup you will windup back where you currently are. 7.8gig's out of 9. do to the fact that your "image" has the partition information that only supports up to the 8 gig limit.
The only way I know of that allows you to "resize" existing partitions WITHOUT losing your data is Powerquest's Partition Magic 4.0. It runs about 49 to 59 bucks depending on where you buy it. But I will say it is the best 50 bucks you will ever spend! With it you can resize and also change format types on the fly without losing your software!
Hope this helps answer your questions

Never mind guys...I took the plunge and just fdisked and got the one partition I wanted, and lo and behold, my backup cd's from my old harddrive worked on my new drive. Thank goodness!!

I raised this question some time ago. This is what I was told... It seems that HP does some type of "tatooing" to the system board to identify it as an HP (probably in the BIOS). You apparently can always change the HD and use the recovery CD's that come with the HP...to even format the HD if you need to, which you have already found out. Where you run into problems is when you change the mobo and try to use the recovery discs...they apparently will not work without the special "tatooing". I was told that there is a special program HP has to do this to a new mobo so that it will work. I'm not sure if it is available to the general public, or just to HP techs. Glad that you got your problem straightened out.
