Forget resolutions.

Any modern scanner will do great work on photos, if that is what you plan to do..

Concentrate on "Color Depth" more.

24 bit is acceptable
36 better
42 is currently the best I know of.

Stay with a good brand like HP

300 dpi is the MAX you should scan at unless you're scanning a 1 x 2" and plan to blow it to an 8 x 10
Don't scoff, I enlarge small wallet photos all the time.

On resolution, a 300dpi scan of a 8x10 is a file of about 26mb

This is pretty large and will bog the printer down and make the system usless while printing, some printers will take up to 20 min to process a 26mb file.

Large numbers of resolution are for line art, schematics and color slides..

Scanner resolution setting will depend on what resolution you'll be printing it. What you're referring to above is Optical Resolution. Most inexpensive scanners have a minimum optical resolution of 300 x 600.

The best resolution for a scanner out that I know of is 48bit. However, you will not be able to detect a difference between 32bit and 48bit since the human eye isn't capable of distinguishing the two bit modes... 48bit scanning wil only produce bigger image size and will not be noticeable.
