I reformated my old pc and I think I screwed up and did it in FAT16. It's a 8GB HD but only shows 2GB. That was long time ago. Now I have this HD in my current system, which is running win2k. I reformated that HD again while in my system in FAT32. It still shows 2GB. How can I solve this and can I do it with the HD in my new system or do I have to put it back or unplug my other HD that is formatted NTSC for win2k? I want the other os to be win98. Thanks.

Hello,

If I correctly understand your problem the easiest solution might be to use the disk management tool in W2K and kill the present partition and after that create a new one and after that format your HD (assuming that OS is on the different HD) or you can use 98 boot disk and do exactly same with fdisk (enabling large size) and format command.

I need more guidance. First win98 disk refuses to open in my win2k sys. It says, reinsert win98 disk. Then the fdisk command don't work.

Can you post some step by step methods? I'd really like to do this while the HD is in my current sys if possible.

In Win2K the first thing you wanna do if you have not done it already is:

1.) Right click the taskbar and choose "Properties" on the taskbar and start menu properties window click the "Advanced" tab. At the bottom of the window is Start Menu Settings put a check mark next to the one that says "Display Administrative tools".

2.) Now from the "Start" menu go to "Programs" -> "Administrative tools" -> "Computer Management".

3.) In the left pane under "Storage" click on the Disk Management folder.

4.) In the Right Pane now you should see your Disk 0 with a 2GB c: drive and the other 6GB of unallocated space.

5.)Right click on the unallocated space and choose "Format" this will format the space and now it should be available to you as an E: drive (Assuming you have only a CD Rom and no other drives).

Now when you go into my computer you should see your newly created 6GB Drive http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hope that helps if not post a reply and we can go from there.

I finally got to it. Worked like a charm. Thanks alot.

Now, can I install win98 on it from the desktop of my win2k pc? I don't have a win98 boot disk. I only have the win98 CD.

If you need the win98 boot disk, go to www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) they have all boot disk's to download there!

So I got the bootdisk and it's working. But of course nothing can go without problems. When I try to run "setup" it starts copying files and everytimes its a different file that it gets stuck on. "can't copy xxxxx" I'm so annoyed. I have 2 partitions on the HD, both in FAT32. It's not like I've not done this a million times. Please, ideas.

Try cleaning your CD and your cdrom drive

I'm annoyed beyond belief. I fdisk to get rid of all partitions, then format, then run setup. Still it shows the menu and there is a msramdrive as the second partition. How the heck do I get rid of that? It's looking for a floppy everytime I do anything. I had this problem before with my own sys, but I reformatted and it was fine. So what can I do?

why don't you down load the HDD manufactures installation software and try using it to size the disk and install it. Or start from scratch. Us a win95 boot disk, Boot up to the disk and do the fdisk. When the option comes up to choose large disk support click yes. Then Remove all partitions and create a new primary dos partion and use maximum avalable size. Then shut down and reboot. Then do a format and you should end up with one partition that is the full size and formatted in FAT32. You should then be able to do a "sys C:" command to transfer the system files. This should get you to a c: prompt.Take a look at this link. This is how I activate the cdrom in dos mode to load windows. You can also down load cdrom and windows boot disk from here. once you have the cdrom up and running load your O/S http://www.angelfire.com/la2/rlpos1/page3.html
