I just added 512 megs to the 512 I already had. With 1 gig memory, is it necessary to have a pagefile (swapfile) in Windows 2000?
I notice that Windows is only using about 180 megabytes normally on my system. I do have the pagefile set to 100-500 meg.
Any recommendation on how to best use this ram to get optimum performance? Thanks!

With that much memory i doubt you will probably need a page file.

Agreed, but I would set it for 500 min and 500 max just the same.

I think you should have a 2 MB swap file. It's the min swap file size in WinXP.

with 1 gig a ram using pagefile is just a waste of harddrive space. i have 256 mb and i'm using 1500 mb for pagefile and that isn't really making much of a difference.

Virtual Memory (pagefile) in WinXP (http://www.aumha.org/a/xpvm.htm) . Decide for yourself.

Thanks for the input. Also, that's an interesting link, but it states that Windows will use whatever amount of ram your system has. I don't find that to be true at all. Norton System Doctor shows that I'm using about 250 - 300 megs when I have several large apps running at the same time.
I tested the system with the mandatory 2 meg pagefile, and when I rebooted, Windows 2000 said it was resizing my pagefile because it was too small. I clicked "ok" and then checked to see what it had resized to, but it was still 2 megs.
There seems to be no way to get rid of that annoying little notice other than setting the pagefile to 25 megs or so.
The system still seems to use only 150 to 200 megs of memory after a normal boot, even with the pagefile set so small.
I just don't think Windows 2000 makes use of the memory that's installed.

In these days of 100gb+ HDD's, whats a couple of hundred meg though for a pagefile
