another java graphics question

Ok, I have a custom component which extends Jpanel. Its purpose is to render a graph. Now the task is to highlight edges of the graph when they are founs according to certain graph search algorithms. Obviously to highlight these edges, all I do is paint over the desired edge with a different color. But how do I do this. how do I redraw the panel by only changing one thing?
