Working on an old AMD 400 win98SE. Everytime I double click the My Computer icon, the PC hangs. All the other apps and icons seem working fine.

you got any IDE chipset drivers installed? or CD-RW / DVD drives installed, check you drivers.
Also try going to
start --> programs --> accessories --> system tools --> system info and in one of the menus there run system file checker!.

Ed: you should also check that any tweaker proggies aren't blocking access.

I've run SFC and it repaired several files but still the same. IDE drivers... I just let windows detect and install. This was a newly clean-installed windows. How do I know the IDE driver? The mobo is a redfox (ALADDIN5-2A5kkF9DC-00) with ALI M1542 A1 chipset (am I correct?). Where do I find its driver?

Is there a CD in the drive? It may be scratched. Are all drives jumpered properly? Cable condition? Bent or collapsed pins on the CD drive?

slight side line here but do you have a cable modem and is it installed via USB, if so is it a webstar?

Sorry but my newest tech is still a 56K analog modem with dialup ISP. But it still works.

It's fixed. Did installed the ALI integrated driver for IDE and AGP and removed the cd-drive from master slave and cabled as secondary master. Don't know which is the fixed but the problem is gone. Thanks BB, u9dbg, and Strawbs (thoug I was surprised why I went to Asus.... joke only). Thanks again...:t :t
