Ok...heres the lowdown. I have this sitting around:

Pentium III 500 processor
Abit BF6 motherboard
512MB PC100 RAM
Hercules 3D Prophet II GeForce 2 MX400 32MB AGP video

I play Everquest on it alot, but it needs upgrading because it lags in alot of zones. This is what I wanted to replace the guts with:

Athlon XP 1800+ processor
EpoX 8RDA motherboard
256MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
Hercules 3D Prophet II GeForce 2 MX400 32MB AGP video (same one)

My question is this. Since the new setup has half the RAM of the old one, will it perform crappy just like the old one did? Or will the new one walk all over the old one even with half the memory?

Even running half the ram, DDR333 will out perform pc100.

Performance should be dramatically better, though with the smaller amound of RAM you may have to turn off some character models.

I play EQ on an Athlon XP1800+ on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (also nForce2 chipset) with 512mb PC-2700 and an Albatron GeForce4 Ti4200 128mb video card, running Windows XP Pro. I can play in any zone with all graphics options on and have no frame rate problems. Well, the Bazaar is still slow with the clipping plane on max, but it's good enough to work with.

You'll want more RAM and a better video card when you afford it, but going to a Athlon XP 1800+ on an nForce2 board is definitely a good move.

Much better although you may still not be able to play newer games at top settings. If i were you another 256mb RAM would be the next item on the shopping list

Everythings good but your vid card you definatly needa better one most NEW games recommend a 128mb vid card for best appearence but 64mb DDR will do and yes might wanna check out pc-2700 mem and use the dual channel of your nforce2 board :t
