Hey guys, Just assembled a new K7s5aPro machine with a 64mb ddr Verto mx440-se and I can't set the colors above 16. I installed the k7s5a install cd directly after a clean win982nd and it loaded some vga drivers along with lan, usb, ect. I then tried to load the verto cd and after a restart, it booted to just before the log-in screen and re-booted again to safemode. I tried to change colors in safemode, but no options to do so. So I uninstalled the verto drivers and now I am out of safemode but back to square one with 16 colors. I read the readme on the verto cd and it said if you have a sis chipset, you need a special file .... agp.vxd I think. I figured this was on the k7s5a cd but I guess not. I will see if sis has any info on their site. In the meantime, any ideas?

Just downloaded the agp file from sis.com and installed it. No difference. Is there a possible conflict between the verto and ecs board? Btw it's an agp video card. I thought mabey the monitor was too old and wouldn't support a high resolution but I've had that happen before and it never sent me into safemode....HELP

Ahem. You're supposed to run the CD setup immediately after reinstalling Windows.

I would start from scratch. As soon as you're in Windows, run the ECS CD and reboot/run it until it's done. Use the latest drivers from nVidia too.

Bill, If you re-read the origional post, it says that I immediatly installed the ecs driver cd after a fresh windows 98 install....You advised me of that before I began this build!! .... But still I am stuck. With that said, what should I try next? ....Anyone??

Are any errors showing in Device Manager?

bpb, After ecs cd is loaded, device manager shows a standard agp diplay driver with no problems .... after I load the new invidia drivers, the machine reboots to safemode and the device manager shows a geforce mx440-se with no errors.?.?I got invidias latest drivers and updated from device manager under the geforce properties. Still reboots into safemode. I went to PNY's site and read the faq guide on the 440mx-se agp and it mentioned "if you only have 16 colors, it could be a monitor driver conflict." It recomemded setting the monitor driver from "specific monitor" to "plug and play". I'll try that next. Thanks for the input

Well, I tried the plug & play settings in the bios and irq assign to agp like the verto faq suggested and no dice. I wondered if Xp would set the card up properly so I loaded Xp as an upgrade to Win982nd and Xp likes my new card! I was able to load the verto drivers and everything. I wonder what my 982nd was missing. Mabey an update service pack or something....

Hey guys, I am having a bear of a time trying to get this card to work in win98second. To recap, the display properties only have an option for 16 colors. I have uninstalled the nvidia drivers and re-installed them. Same thing. Does any one else have this card working successfully on a k7s5a pro?? I am at whitts end...

Leave the freaking IRQ assignments alone. This is not going to help. Set everything back to Auto.

What you need to do is install the AGP driver for the SiS chipset SUCCESSFULLY. Before you did that, the card won't go beyond standard VGA capabilities.

Thanks for the freaking reply Peter. I only mentioned the irq reassign ONCE during this entire thread .... and only because the manufactorers' website suggested it. Mabey I interpreted your reply wrong and if so, I appololgise. If not .... thanks for the scolding:mad: I am just trying to figure this one out and I thought looking to your peers for advice was what this forum was about.

Sorry for the inconvienence,

Not against you personally. "IRQ sharing conflicts" ist the first answer you keep getting with those problems - and at the same time it's the most useless answer.

As Bill stated before, your symptoms are the classic ones for AGP driver not installed.

Here's the latest....I tried downloading the latest sis735 update drivers and started from scratch. A format and new install of 982nd followed by the ecs mobo install disk. I let the machine reboot as many times as it wanted, 5 total I think as the ecs drivers were loaded. I updated the sis drivers as well as nvidia's 43.50 driver set. The results were the same as before. I rma'd the verto and ordered an ATI raedon7000 64mb agp (same thing I run in my k7s5a machine) ....my buddies is the one I'm posting about here...and installed the new card. One more format and install of 982nd and my new card loaded as smooth as a baby's ....arm. NO driver conflicts or updates needed, just the ecs disk and the ati driver disk and I'm smillin' again. I had the chance to replace the verto with a new one and I probably should've just so I could say I tried twice but my heart wasn't in it. Thanks pete, bill, and others for your posts!! I'm gonna stay an ATI man!
