I just posted some information in discussion with socalgal regarding a program called GO BACK by Wildfiles. I loaded this thing on my Brother-in-laws computer (he's always "playing" with settings) and I couldn't really believe the results...It actually worked..just like the advertising said. It allows you to actually go-back in time to a previous time when you didn't have the crash after loading new drivers, or a new program, or even before you got a virus! A new version (with SCSI support)is available as a beta download that expires in 10 days or 9-18-99, whichever comes first from the following site: www.goback.com Has anyone else used this program? BTW, it was a finalist in PCWeek for best of COMDEX.

Hi Bob,
No, I haven't used this program, but it sounds similar to a feature in First Aid, which I used to use. The feature was BackTrack and it basically took a snapshot of the registry every time you started your computer, allowing you to "backtrack" to your previous registry settings.
Then there's always Windows ScanReg.
From Win98 Windows Help:
"Your system always keeps a backup copy of your registry configuration (including user account information, protocol bindings, software program settings, and user preferences). You can use the backup copy if your current registry encounters a problem. Each time you restart your computer, Registry Checker automatically scans your registry. If Registry Checker notices a problem, it automatically replaces the registry with the backup copy."
I had a wonderful (not) opportunity to personally interface with TweakUI, a GREAT utility IMHO - I really believe it saved me from a 2nd reformat (before I had BBA's Winback).
After some random tweaking, suddenly I had a explosion of errors, IPFs, graphic glitches, freezes ... really bad. I desperately managed to get into TweakUI's Repair Tab and hit Repair System Files. Well whatever it did, it worked, and I've been a believer ever since!!
Myself, I find life alot simpler without all these add-on "utilities". I run MoboMon, SoftFSB, Rain, NAV 5, and NukeNabber, seti, and that's about it in my systray. I let Win98 pretty much do the rest, plus a little tweak here and there http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Bottom line, I reckon, is to go with what works best for you and your system!
Whoa.. I guess I expounded a bit for not using the GoBack prog... sorry ... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif

I'm glad to see that you have found something that works for you. Obviously many of the fixes you have used are not for the technically challanged (spelled brother-in-law) He lives an hour away and I was getting tired of re-loading windows every time he "tweaked" something and things wouldn't work. I had heard of this "GO Back program" and hunted it down for him and made him buy it for his computer. I told him it would be cheaper than what I was going to start charging him to re-load. Here's what they said about the program to convince me it was worth the try:
Why go back in time?
at 7:20 you installed new software and at 7:35 nothing worked, including the uninstall at 7:40 (things got worse), so wouldn't you like to go back to 7:20?
at 9:15 you started making major changes to a document, and at 9:50 accidentally overwrote the original (which you need), so wouldn't you like to pop back to 9:15 for a moment?
today you downloaded something from the net, and now you've got a virus, so wouldn't you like to go back to yesterday?
at this moment you're on an airplane three hours into flight and you did an "oops" (a big one), and the portable crashed and won't boot, so wouldn't you like to go back five minutes?
and this is a really big because, you don't always have a backup when you need it, so wouldn't you like to go back anyway?
Here's the line that was the kicker for me...With GoBack installed, you can easily back out of software-related trouble, regardless of its cause. Even a "crashed" system that won't allow your computer to boot won't stop you.
Maybe some others out there may benefit from this cure for brother-in-law syndrome. BTW, with the new larger HD in place, I also used BBA's advice and made a winback file...just in case.
