Being bored, I was checking out files on my C:\ and came across this file Suhdlog.dat... I opened it in Notepad and except for a lot of gibberish it contains a lot of comments about my HD.

This is just a small porion of the data in this file: [HMR1: Read1]

[End with Return=:0:]
[HMR1: Read2]
Drv=:0x80:, Cnt=:1:, Op=:0:, SecCyl=:0x1:, Hd=:0x1:, ExtSec=:63:
[Begin]

Disk I/O error
Replace the disk, and then press any key

[End with Return=:0:]
[HMR1: Write2]
Drv=:0x80:, Cnt=:1:, Op=:1:, SecCyl=:0x1:, Hd=:0x1:, ExtSec=:63:

I have no problems at all with my HD or Windows on my system, so I was wondering... is this file created as a result of having my 2 HDs, DVD-ROM and CD-RW on the on-board Promise Controller and not on IDE 0 or IDE 1?

Is there a program I can use to read everything in this file? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Quote from http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/suhdlog.shtml

"SUHDLOG.DAT is created to the root directory of drive C: during the setup of Windows 95. It contains backup copies of the original boot sectors of the machine and the system files. This file is not used by Windows 95 unless you uninstall it - in which case the boot sectors and system files are restored."

Hope this helps.

So if I delete it will Windows just recreate an up-to-date version in C:\?

Is all the info in the file saying I have partition errors and no OS found, a result of booting from the Promise Controller and having nothing on IDE 0 or IDE 1?

I've never had a virus (boot or otherwise), so do I need this file at all?

Is there some program I can use to read everything in the file instead of reading mostly gibberish that I see using Notepad? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Windows stores a lot of **** in a lot of places. You don't need the file, but it's really not that big so you could just hide it if it bugs you =)
