Which IBM drive?

I was looking on pricewatch (yet again) and i saw a 41 gig deskstar 60gxp it was $141
and it said that it was faster than the 75gxp which is about $20 dollars more. Why would the cheaper one be faster? Is it even true?

IMO, the 75GXP is the most popular. If you look at threads titled "What is the best hard drive?" in the search, you will find many people recomend them. I was going to buy a Maxtor hd but people told me the IBM Deskstar 75GXP was the best. I bought the 45gb model for $149.99 at Outpost.com (I think).

Also - 41gb? Isn't that a little odd sized?

It seems the 60GXP is slightly faster (so little you wouldn't even notice it). But I guess it's cheaper because it's an older model.

I have a Maxtor myself, a 10Gb 7200rpm. My brother has 2 Maxtor 7200rpm drives, a 40 and 20Gb. For so far I've had bad experience with all brands but Maxtor. In the past few years I've had 2 broken Quantums and a broken Seagate. Both my father and brother had 2 broken IBM's, a Western Digital and a Seagate. To be honest, I've never heard about a broken Maxtor...

Yeah it is and i have also been told that I've also heard that the 75gxp are good thats why i searched for them on pricewatch i searched for "75gxp 40 gig" and two drives came up both are the 60gxp and say in the description that they are faster then the 75's. As for the 41 gig thing it is advertised as 40 gig but actual space is 41. I've seen the same thing for drives that advertise for 45 gig then they say 46.3 or whatever. I couldn't care less though more gig's than label claim is good to me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The 60GXP's come after the 75GXP's.

60GXP means that that line of harddrives goes up to 60GB. This uses 20GB/platter up to 3 platters/drive

the 75GXPs goe up to 75GB, and they use 15GB/platter, and up to 5 Platters/drive (There was a 20GB model with 2 platters though)

The higher platter density is all that the 60GXP's have over the 75GXPs, which makes them slightly faster. They come in 20, 40 and 60GB models.

Actualy they arent exact numbers since platters are slightly bigger than stated here - the 30GB 75GXP is really 30.7GB and the 45GB 75GXP is really 46.1GB.

However, the 75GXP's dont even come in 40GB models, so maybe your not comparing 40GB models to eachother in each line..which could explain the price difference.

I think IBM has come out with 10GB and 30GB versions of thier 60GXP line, because they list the product codes on thier page, but they dont list these sizes in the tech specs.

I think you'll be happy no matter which you get. Just get the cheaper if it comes down to that.

Thats possible the 60gxp i was looking at was 40 (41) and the 75gxp was 45 (46) gigs priced $150 and $165 respectively. I guess the real question is should i pay 20 extra bucks for 5 more gigs and a little bit slower drive. Well, if what Barney said is true about not being able to really notice the difference, eh....I wouldn't really worry if it's a 60GXP or 75. Depends how much you need the extra space. Try to find a lower price on that 45gb drive. Also, thost ghetto stores at price watch typically like to have $10 shipping charges on items that are "cheap" so be careful.

for sure i always check shipping the 45 gig 75gxp is 160 plus 6 bucks shipping i thought that was pretty good. But in pricewatch's defense they dont own the stores retailers are allowed to charge what they want and pricewatch urges you to report exessive shipping fee's most stores have different options for shipping though and they go up! If you want to buy a monitor over the internet be prepared to pay at least $50 plus thats the slow shipping they got options like next day and next five minutes (well maybe not that last one) that go up to $200!!
