Okay, not sure how common knowledge this is...
But did you know thati f you buy a compaq computer (2000+ models i think) that if you wipe off the D: partition, you prmptley loose all your software? IE: you cannot even use the restore CD to fix it! The new restore CD's are basically JUST A BOOTDISK! and it initializes the D: partition's restore software!
To top it off, if you need to restore that D: partition, you have to BUY the OTHER restore CD from Compaq to restore the unit! Now, someone correct me if I am wrong...but this means, essentially, that they are selling you a computer w/o the actual software. Then, they are pretty much charging you twice ($40 for the 2nd set) for the software that you thought you had paid for int he first place. Isn't this illegal?

Hi SoopaStar!
I'm not very sure about Compaq's policies or agreements. Infact, I've not used Comapaq machines too. But if they are selling their PCs inclusive of the mentioned softwares, then it is illegal and can be challenged.
Let us wait and see what other users have to say.

Harsha.

Thats the smartest topic sentence i've seen all day http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I hate compaq they are basically just plain idiots. I wouldn't doubt what you are saying isn't true cause compaq is a company that prides themselves on making their computers not user friendly. They have tried to design just about everything to need a piece of their software to fix, they have made users depend on them and gave them little alternative options to solving problems.

Well I have to agree and disagree I hate compaq desktop computers but I like their Laptop I have had 2 laptops from them an Armada 4130 and now a M700. Both of which i got because of the price to produce ratio. But of course as soon as i got them I formated the entire drive and reinstalled all of my own stuff. (a must for most of these companies). But ya they will sux u dry if your not careful

There BIOS is also written to the hard drive on most models. So if you format the hard drive you also just wiped out your bios!!!!
I wouldnt buy a compaq if you paid me!!!!!!
Ditto what vagabond said. I've used three different compaq desktops and they're all ****. The BIOS on the hard drive was a superbly stupid idea. And of course the proprietary motherboard formats are a curse.
The laptops, however, are pretty sweet.

Hello all
If your Compaq is still under warranty call and tell them to send the other disk or arrange for return of computer. They will send the other disk for free. I had a friend do this about 3 months ago when I found his supposed restore disk was a piece of ****. When you tell them in that way they will send it to you so they won't have to refund your money. I had him tell them that all new computers are to be shipped with a copy of all programing sold on it. A copy on a hard disk was not acceptable to him as a legal copy. One week later he had the second disk in his grubby little hands for free.
He also bought this with out asking me about it. He won't make that mistake agin. LOL

A friend of mine asked me to fix his computer-it appeared to have a virus. I formatted the harddrive and tried to use the restore disks. Studid things loaded, started "formatting harddrive" and stayed that way for 3 hours. It was a celeron 600 with a 30 gig disk. After a while, I was able to get dos on it and try installing win98se. It kept crashing because of the weird stuff compaq uses in their machines. He ended up taking it to London Drugs. They were able to get it working. Cost him like $100. Freakin pieces of ****!
Me and my techie friends call them "Comcrap"
