I've got some RAM to spare after boot. I was wondering if I increased the modem cache size, would I get any noticeable performance increases. I'll try not to bother you with any other modem questions.

I was wondering if I increased the modem cache size, would I get any noticeable performance increases. I'll try not to bother you with any other modem questions. bigslammer 08-15-1999, 05:05 PM at the run command type sysedit and under window/system.ini there is [386enh] directly underneath type in Com1Irq4Buffer=x where x is the amount you want cached i've tried 1024, 4096 and 10240. Doesn't seem to speed up the modem but I do get less conncetion failures when playing games. Bleeding Edge 08-16-1999, 12:06 AM I tried that way back when...can't remeber exactly how..Edited the registry to reflect a large comm port buffer I think. I didn't notice any increase in performance but I didn't notice any degradation either. So you might as well give it a try. Can you post the method for everyone here who might be interested? Gordon 08-16-1999, 01:17 AM I came across these settings, which improved my modem performance a little, from 44,000 bps to as high as 46,666, w/the average being 45,333. I've got a US Robotics 56K FAX internal, so I don't know if it will work w/any other brands. DIRECTIONS: Go to Modems in the Control Panel, then Properties, and then Advanced Settings. In the Extra Settings box, type in: s32=66 SoopaStar 08-16-1999, 02:34 AM What does That 66 do? SS bigslammer 08-16-1999, 02:35 AM gordon even better I think is typing -v90=1 in that spot. I connect at 52000 and download between 5.1kbps and 5.3kbps. playing games is my problem, the ping is just too high. around 300-400 depending on the server. good luck and thanks. Gordon 08-16-1999, 09:42 AM SoopaStar: I don't know what the 66 does. It was a suggestion that someone told me about that seem to work. Bigslammer: Thanks, I'll give your suggestion a try. Gordon 08-16-1999, 10:14 AM Bigslammer: Your suggestion doesn't seem to work w/my US Robotics modem. When used, my modem isn't recognized. When I remove it, I have to reboot, in order to get the modem to be recognized again. Thanks anyway. What kind of modem do you have? Gordon 08-16-1999, 10:32 AM I found these two settings in my System.ini, under [386Enh]. Anyone know what they mean? Are they Buffers, and if so, can I get any improvement by increasing them, and what would the recommended sizes be? COM2TxSize=16 COM2RxSize=8 bigslammer 08-16-1999, 02:53 PM gordon sorry for inconveniencing you with that setting. originally mine was a 56kflex but when the standard switch to v90 lucent provided me with the drivers to upgrade it. might not work with your USR modem but -v90=1 enable my v90 option. other setting might be(try s38=1 enables 56kflex, this is for lucent though, not sure bout USR) Lucent Technologies, 56k Flex AT&F&C1 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem 56kflex AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70W1\N3&Q5&K3S38=0 Lucent Technologies, LT WinModem AT&FX Lucent Technologies, LT WinModem 56Kflex AT&F Lucent Technologies, LT WinModem 56Kflex AT&F1&W^M Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem 56Kflex AT&FS=S10 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem 56Kflex Enabled S38=1 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem 56Kflex Disabled S38=0 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem Limit Upstream S37=14 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem V.90 Enabled -V90=1 Lucent Technologies, LT Winmodem V.90 Disabled -V90=0 Lucent Chipset (almost all others) try adding S38=9 to your init string (or use ATS38=9 for your init string) to start the connection at 46000 baud instead of 56k. Lowering the 9 to 8 starts the connection at 44000 baud and so on, valid numbers are 2-14. Disabling Kflex should not be necessary for connecting to USIT, but to disable Kflex try ATS38=0 for your init string (or add S38=0 to an existing one) See also the page on LT Winmodems LT Win Modem - &fw LT Win Modem - &F&C1&D2X7\N5\Q3\D1 LT Win Modem - AT&FX LT Win Modem - AT&FS0=0V1&C1&D2 LT Win Modem - at&fs0=0v1&c1&d2 LT Winmodem 56k and V90 - AT&F&C0&D0S38=0 and if you want you can add -V90=0 to disable V90 Protocol or -V90=1 to enable it LT WINMODEM (56kflex) - AT&F1&W^M AT&FX&C1&D2S95=1 Nutcase 08-16-1999, 06:56 PM I have a 3com Modem as well. I get about 145 pings on games my ping can even go as low as 100. I dunno I really messed around with my modem. Another thing that I found out that really works is not installing your modem on Com3 or Com4. And umm the buffer thing in the [i386] seems to work I did that before it was posted here and well my pings have increaced. Then again I also moved into my new house and I can actually connect at 50.3 now! Yippie! No more 28.8 connections. I can also download at 7k/sec hehe.. well there are my 2 cents bigslammer 08-16-1999, 10:29 PM nutcase so that buffer under[i386] actually worked for you. you said it increased your ping, or did you mean it lowered and improved your ping. also if you're playing unreal could you tell me if you have any special settings in your options menu for the game bigslammer 08-16-1999, 10:31 PM forgot to ask you nutcase, what isp do you use?
