I am considering getting cable but am confused about the modem used.

Is it possible to use the cable internet between two computers by moving the modem between them? Or is the modem fixed to just one computer.

I want to be able to use it the cable on the laptop and the desktop computer so I can have access to both systems on the net without networking them.

So is the modem like usb or serial so I can move it between computers??

You don't need to move modem physically.
Actually, you can just move the cable(usually cat5 cable) to connect your laptop or desktop.

here is the basic how cable INternet connection
TV cable(coaxial cable) ==> Cable modem ==(cat5 cable) => PC

I suggest you to use a HUB to conncet your laptop and desktip.
So you can I have your cable Internet access shared.
If your cable provider give you 2 or more IP, you don't need to setup your home netowk.

here is how it looks like
cable modem=(cat5)=>HUB =(cat5==>laptop
............................................=(cat5 )==>desktop

Hub is like a junction box which connects your computers.

Typically you need to switch the cable modem off before you swap it over as the mac address of your network adapter is used by the cable modem/isp for registration/communications.

Just thought Id throw that in as it stumped me when I first got my modem and tried to use it on other machines without switching it off!

Also use network Cat5 in preference to USB if you have the options , even the ISP will advise you of this!

Best idea as UOW says is to get two ip addresses takes all the hassle of plugging / unplugging etc away.

You could also get a cable router for $60 then connect up to 132 PC's (like my model can) and share files/printers/internet access.

Or connect it to a hub/switch for the same effect without the router.
