I was wondering if I could get a video card that had DDR memory to be used in a PCI slot on a Alton V605A mainboard? right now I have a EVGA Geforce 2 mx200 32mb SDRAM PCI video card.

Your mobo doesn't have an agp slot?

All of the geforce4 mx pci cards have 64mb of ddr:t

Not all Geforce4 mx cards have ddr. Some have sdr. Other options include Radeon 7000, 7500, 9000. Some models of the 7000 and 7500 have sdr, some have ddr.

BTW, don't you have AGP on that board?

Yes it does have a AGP slot thankfully my board is not that old.

Then why are you going to get a PCI card?

chriswhitelaw
03-28-2003, 09:44 PM
Ok fine I'll get a AGP card but can I get a video card that has DDR memory?

Bizkitkid2001

Yes you can:) Almost all new cards released have at least 64mb of ddr. How much money are you willing to spend?

your opioion on this

ATI RADEON 64MB DDR AGP 7500 FOR $79.99

Its good for casual gaming but not really suited for a hardcire gamer. Are you into a lot of gaming? If you are get yourself a geforce4 ti4200 or a radeon 9500 if you have the money.

I play unreal tournament 2003 and if I can get a video card that is under a $100 that can run that game nicely that would be great.

Can anyone reccomend a video card? DDR OR SDRAM? PCI OR AGP?

you can get a geforce 4 ti4200 for only $118 from www.newegg.com This card is very fast. What is the rest of your pc like? System ram, cpu?

alton mainboard v605a
768mb memory
intel celeron processor 667 (overclocked to 833)
40gb hard drive
evga 32mb pci geforce 2 mx200
creative soundblaster 16
56x cdrom
48x18x48 cd-rw
16x hi-val dvd rom

I think that's it.

are you planning on upgrading your motherboard and cpu in there near future?

chriswhitelaw
03-28-2003, 11:47 PM
I was when I could find a good motherboard and cpu combo.

So I can use get a video card with DDR memory then?

But between Athlon and Pentium prices it's going to be a long wait.

Well then pick yourself up a geforce 2 ti, anything higher will just be useless as your processor isn't fast enough:t Go here http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=geforce2 and look at the refurbished geforce2 ti 450. I have the same card and its pretty good(scroll down)

So I can get a video card that has DDR memory on it? Does my motherboard have to support it? Dumb questions on my part but I just wanna make sure:rolleyes:

Yes you can get a DDR video card

Is your agp slot 2x or 4x?

chriswhitelaw
03-29-2003, 09:53 PM
and all this time I was thinking I couldn't get one!time for me to go back to computer school.

I'm looking around right now for a good card at a fairly reasonable price. God I hate making these decisions!

Just so you know, it doesn't matter what kind of RAM your video card has, so long as it fits in the correct slot on the motherboard.

Video RAM is completely transparent to the motherboard and OS. Different types may perform differently, but all the system responds to is the amount. I would get an AGP card if I were you, and for that system probably a Radeon 9000 or 9000 Pro rather than a Gf2 Ti. It's fairly cheap and gives DX 8 compatibility.

Of course this is coming from someone who put a Radeon 9500 Pro in a Duron 850 system.

Hes running a celeraon 9000 would be overkill, even a geforce2ti is a little high:rolleyes:

Rugor
03-30-2003, 02:45 AM
True, he won't get full performance from the 9000, but he will get the DX 8 feature set which will extend the usable life of the card.

I'd avoid buying yesterday's technology.

So what depends on the video card for the best performance? cpu and memory?or cpu, memory and motherboard?

Bizkitkid2001
03-30-2003, 11:06 AM
Since you having a slower celeron, it won't be fast enough to send data to the video card as fast as the video card can receive data, so the cpu will be the bottleneck.

chriswhitelaw

Is there anyway to fix this besides doing a upgrade of the cpu?

Bizkitkid2001
03-30-2003, 11:09 AM
nope

chriswhitelaw

lastest update is

upgrade of motherboard and cpu is a must!

Celerons suck! cause of the L2 Cache

I was told to get either Athlon or Pentium

Go ahead and spoil yourself. Get the motherboard, cpu, and new video card:D

I'm going to really have to research a good deal for a motherboard and cpu combo somewhere.Got any ideas between Athlon and Pentium?what about Duron?

Here's what I have to work with if anyone can help me out.

$130 on a motherboard and cpu only

Rugor

Go to Newegg (http://www.newegg.com) and order an Athlon XP 1700+ retail box for $65 (includes shipping), and an ECS K7S5A Pro motherboard for $59 (also includes shipping). That's $124, and you can use your existing SDRAM and other components for the present.

Then you can order a new video card, and possibly a beefier PSU later on.

Ya know that's the third time I heard it, what is a PSU?

yeah man.... I totally agree that you should bag that motherboard and get into something alot more friendly...... I had the exact same setup - Alton v605a mobo with celeron 1ghz and nvidia-2 64mb graphics card........ the motherboard CHOKED the graphics.... my FPS went into the negatives in MOHAA and Battlefield 1942.... LOL and forget about playing with any sound, even with a PCI sound card. The bus just cant handle the throughput...

The Alton (or any pcChips) mobos are garbage, and I too got suckered into buying one at a big computer show a few years ago. I have learned alot about PCs since then, and NEWEGG is the only way to fly. MSI, ASUS and GigaByte mobos are some of the best, but everyone will have their own opinion. Also check out futuremark.com for benchmarking tests when you start tweaking the stuff, and their live chat has some very helpful people in there.

I went with an MSI mobo, AMD 1700 and a new ti4400 video card (I realize now I could have been fine with the 64mb) and it's screaming now.... 70-90 FPS in MOHAA and Battlefield 1942..... I did also just upgrade to a AMD 2500 Barton and Corsair memory, but thats because I WANT MORE FPS! LOL

But you could definitely hook up at Newegg for under $130... then like the others said, upgrade your powersupply to something over 350W.....
