Has anyone with this type of computer, Got the Ultra DMA 33 to work????

the hard drive: QUANTUM FIREBALL CX10.0A

the cable: it isnt blue on one end, so im thinking this is the problem.

the I/O EIDE (Secondary): isnt blue either. (cant be the problem)

I haven't taking the drive out to check and see if it says it can run in this mode but im going to after this post, and any kind of feedback would be extremely helpful. Thanks for your time.

The main board for the Presario 5360 has built-in support for UDMA33. You don't need the higher density cable for it to work. Those cables are necessary for UDMA66 and up. A regular cable would be fine in your case.

What is the problem? Does it work? Check the jumpers.

Well, thats the thing, when i put the operating system hard drive into the secondary slot it comes up with this: LI

never seen this before...and how would i tell if it is working anyway? i know that the post etc to the desktop would be noticably faster but im sure that if i dont have it in the secondary EIDE slot it isnt going to be UDMA right?

sorry for being so sloppy.

Is this drive second hand? LI seems to be indicating that Linux is loading.

If you didn't install Linux, download zap and run it to clean the new drive:

Well, I didn't do anything but take out the EIDE (UMDA) cables and switch them around, from Primary to Secondary, the operating system was on the Primary before i swapped them around and tried to load the system.

Then when i tried to load the system i got the LI (there is no linux on this hard drive) Then i changed them back and it came back up again.

This is the thing the computer all of a sudden is being very very nice to me, and running super fast from the way it ran before (I.E. internet connection isnt as bad 31.2kbps, internet explorer is more responsive, opening things like yahoo IM is faster, the loading (post) then loading the operating system isnt that much faster though. I know one thing Sysopt.com never loaded as fast as it is now on this machine im not sure if UDMA is playing a part in that or not..

thanks for helping out man (Any other way to tell if it is enabled?? besides checking in the BIOS and Device Manager??)

You can try AIDA32 to check what mode your hard drive is running at.
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

Click on Storage > EIDE to see the information.

To get the hard drive to run at UDMA 66 you need the high density cables mentioned before. When you install them you need to make sure the blue connector is attached at the motherboard connection. The cables are 80 pin in design so it will have a finer appearance than a regular ide cable.:t

Well, I was unaware at first that this came with UDMA cables, cause they look like average EIDE cables. Now, I got the information I was looking for.

I will look into it, i was aware that only with that UDMA cable being a 40pin and 80 wire, would be the only way to run UDMA, but you learn something new everyday obviously! Compaq is screwing with standards it seems lol.

Thanks for the heads up friend. much appreciated..

thank u. :t

I may need to clarify a bit. The cables are 80 wire, 40 pin connectors. So if you have these, just make sure that you connect the blue end to the motherboard and you should be good to go.:t

Yes, as kevrob1 noted, you do need the high density 80-wire ide cables, to start. But your the main board in your computer supports up to UDMA 33, so it won't support UDMA 66. You would need a add-on card, such as the Promise ATA66 or newer products.

The 40-wire will allow your hard drive to run up to UDMA 33. The 80-wire allows for UDMA 66 and up.

jers95gsx, I may have misunderstood you. Were the specs you listed above of the motherboard or the drive? I was thinking they spoke of the capabilities of the motherboard. Admittedly I don't know much about the Compaq mobos... You may indeed need an ad-in card as omega31 stated... Sorry for any confusion I may have caused you:eek:
