A friend wants me to build him a PC mainly for the web on a budget of £250.
I felt upto the challenge and heres what I'm looking at getting:
K7S6A £38
1700XP £40
256 DDR 200 £20
17" monitor refurbished £40
CD-RW £30
Cheap-*** case w/PSU £20
Mouse K/b and speaker £8
Floppy £5
putting in a modem that I have spare.
Hard drive, I cant decide between a Maxtor 30Gb 7200Rpm or a Seagate 40Gb 5400Rpm. Both £40
Which leaves me with the graphics card I have no idea what to get. I make that £241 so far which leaves virtually no money for the graphics card. I am kinda thinking about giving him my graphics card and getting a new one myself since I plan to replace my current card anyway.

I've heard that the Geforce4 MX*** is pretty rubbish and since I need a new one myself I thought that might work out. I'll probably get the Maxtor.

I really don't believe all of that. I'm sick of people saying it stinks....maybe it does for those people but I've got friends with that card who can do everything else that others can. Definately get the Maxtor, you'll be happy and he'll be happy. I've had several types of hard drives including Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, Fujitsu, Toshiba, IBM and Quantum.
Of all of those I have liked Maxtor the most.. Western Digital is a third choice for me, with Quantum in second (I haven't sen any recently though but I still have my Quantum Fireball from G-d knows when.
That GeForce 4 MX*** GPU has been able to handle all of the games I have seen thrown at it including Mafia ( a very graphical resource hungry game)

Yeah I know what you mean about the Gforce 4 MX*** I think I'll just give him mine and then get myself an MX440 to see what everyones complaining about.
With the Hard drive I agree I love my Maxtor, also have a Seagate which is fine. I was more wondering how much difference the Rpm makes on performance.

Well, i guess 30GB will do it for him, and from 7200RPM to 5400RPM, well, you'll notice the difference. As to the graph card, I'd go for an ATI Radeon 9000...check the budget...
