I have WD 13.6gb 7200rpm ata66 HD that is missing a pin. Im not sure when it got knocked off but when i connected the drive today, it hangs at the DMI check. I have a Abit kt7a-raid, a 1.2 athlon clocked to 1.3 and am running windows 98 off of a maxtor 40bg 7200rpm ata100. I tried using a small peice of wire in the hole of the missing pin so that it would connect to the stump of the old pin. I would appreciate any help or possile solutions that anyone would have to offer.

Not positive but the pin is suposed to be missing. I have an IBM deskstar that isn't installed yet and it has a pin missing in the middle of the IDE connector. Almost sure that my WD hard drive was the same way.

Yes that one is missing also, i have a broken pin. Looking at the hard drive from teh back. The pin that is supposed to be missing is at the bottom. The broken pin is on the row above, one over to the left. It is broken off at about 1/5 of the legnth of a full pin from the bottom.

Yes, pin 20 on the IDE connector is supposed to be missing. However, if what I'm reading is that you are missing an additional pin it's time to make a descision. Do you want to solder a new connector onto the PCB or trash the drive? Not too complex for an electronics tech but it can be annoying inasmuch as the boards are multilayered (need to watch out for cold solder joints). Just find a dead drive, if you can, and get the connector off of it.
Best suggestion I have,
