I need a new desktop computer soon to replace a P60. Does ayone know when the AMD dual CPU boards are suppose to be available? I don't know whether to wait or go ahead and get a 2-cpu PIII or 1-cpu Athlon. What do you think?

Should I wait or is it likely to have a bunch bugs to be worked out?

I you *must* have a dually then wait a few months or go with dual PIII.
Still anything will blow P60 away.
Also fast ram helps and now DDR athlons are out now and very afordable. DDR is not much more expensive than PC133 SDRAM!
Not sure, but dual AMD will likely be faster then dual PIII due to faster FSB.
Me, I would buy single 1.2G Athlon w/DDR or wait.

Groundzero:
When you say no contest, I assume that you would choose the dual PIII. Every conparison that I have seen with real-world tests (using disk drive), the dual PIII setup outprerforms both the P4 and Athlon.
If I go with a single Athlon (say 1.2 or 1.3 GHz)l, can I reuse that CPU in the new dual CPU boards or is that info available yet?

oops sorry meant to put dual p3 or a dual amd. (my choices would be the dual amd of course) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
if with yuor question on the cpu uages. most likely the dual mb for amd will be a Slot A. so should work as long as you have a slot a cpu
im wondering what would happen if you put a 1.2 ghz with a 900mhz? would it slow down the system? logic would say you would put the same speeds together. just curious.

i wanted to add another thing into this topic. you will have to run either win2k or linux to support duals cpus and not alot of programs take advantage of duallies. I think i heard quake 3 does tho. Might want to consider that when thinking of buying a dual cpu

Jason:
I know someone running dual PIII 800 MHz, and he says that one CPU is dedicated to disk I/O and the other is a real CPU. In that manner, it does not depend on application support but is OS controlled.
Sort of like SCSI with cheap drives.
