I was installing 98 first edition on a box last night. Every time it got to the "setting up programs in the start menu" part, it would stall. It didn't blue screen or lock up, it just sat there. Took me a while but I remembered that for some reason, windows searches the floppy drive at this point, for what reason, im not sure. Probably for some oem stuff. Anyways to make a long story short, the computer has no floppy drive. I figured I would free up some resources and disable the onboard floppy controller. Only after enabling the controller, even with no drive connected to it, would windows finish the install. Disabled the controller after the install and everything is going fine. Just thought I would share this as I have never seen it anywhere before.

yeah for some reason windows likes to hang if there is no floppy installed when it goes to read it, my main comp has no floppy in it and i used to click on the floppy by mistake and just watch my comp sit there for about a minute or so untill it figured out it wasn't there
