Ok, this darn XP again. I did have a my computers sharing the internet. Now the network works fine but my other computer can't reach the internet again. I have narrowed it down to my computer, but I have unistalled my network card and reenstalled it. But Still get the same problems, the WMI instumentation might be corrupt under advanced tab. I have done a repair. No go. What I think is I need to remove it and then go into the regedit and get rid of any remanants of having the network card in. Is there a way to do that. Then restart and let the computer find it like its a brand new nic card. Is that feasable?

I even tried wingate, but says personal firewall (xp's) is set and that is under the Advanced tab. Which is where the WMI corrupt thing is. Networks killing me:)

you should consider getting a router. it's much less hassles than wingate, ics, etc.

did you try using the system restore instead of a repair? if that doesn't work, a clean install may be in order.

System restore wouldn't work. Tried several different dates and a no go. then did the repair and now have no restore points:(

Check the microsoft site - therre is a way of removing tcp/ip and all the networking components - Moral of story - always keep a backup.

Have you tried installing service pack 1 again?
It always was a first fix help in NT.

Best idea is to have a separate partition or drive and use ghost to clone your root partition - I have five partitions on my disk one for system / programs / sound apps / gfx&web design and backup - I find it works very well and I can switch of system restore as it consumes a lot of space and processor time.

Ok, need a little guidance on routers. I have the Bellsouth SpeedTouch USB modem (ADSL). (kinda looks like a stingray) It plugs into my computer via USB and then to my phone cable. How would that plug into a router since it has no Cat 5 from the modem. I can understand that my other computer would connect via Cat 5 but how would the modem connect. And what would be a good one to get. Tired of WinXP giving me fits on this.

You can hook this one up with either USB or Cat5, has both connects on the back.

Dang thing works great. Have it USB'ed and works great. Just hook your other cpu's into any phone line eith the adapter and they work great. No Cat 5! No crazy IP ****, just works like magic. I say that now but I am sure I will be an expert sooner than Later:)

most of the home routers just require you to set your computer to obtain an IP automatically. the router will use dhcp to assign IPs and dns information to your computer. the whole thing is transparent to the user.
