A hardware DVD decoder card is a card that will allow your computer to be able to play DVDs, with a DVD player.

There are also software decoders (such as PowerDVD, WinDVD) that do the same thing as a hardware decoder card, except without the extra card to install.

Most video cards nowadays has a built in DVD decoder chip that function the same way as a seperate DVD decoder card.

But, you still need the DVD player software to watch the DVD. PowerDVD and WinDVD are a couple of players.

Here's one site you can check out.

As long as you have a 400mhz cpu or better, you shouldn't need a seperate, stand alone decoder card. Software decoders with a semi-decent video card will work just fine.

when i had my 350mhz p2 and dvd i could watch dvd's fine but with no other programs atall running. I got a Creative DXR3 decoder card and was able to use its tv output and still use the pc to surf the net etc without any playback probs.

now though 99% of cards have built in dvd decoders that work with cpu+ram etc to play dvd's on your pc.

i took my dxr3 card out as i have a radeon 7500 now and its pointless.

It has to do with the way DVD data is stored on a disk. It is stored with a special compression algorythm. The decoder decompresses the data. There are two ways. A dedicated card or software.

Also a something like ATI's Rage Theatre chip which also is the hardware TV-out encoder, gives an excelent crisp clear DVD playback

Right-on. When in hardware it doesnt take up so many precious cpu cycles. Even though your cpu is big enuff to do it in software hardware still is a huge +. As it allows the bus to be open for other jobs. IE if surfing the net or whatever you will at times jump even with a 2200+ or whatever. Now not doing anything but watching the movie is fine. but add hardware decoder to the job and its all free for other tasks. Thats why ATI intergrated a hardware decoder into their card. That and it allows higher dvd quality playback without the penaltys of perfromance hit.:t
