I don't see why not release it for destops also? Why wait? Why are they giving extra time to the competition when they already got a chip working? It will supposively be few months? That is a long time. Someone help me understand.

Its all about 'planning ahead' for a company. AMD probably has chips working now over 2 gig. If they released these chips now, what happens to the older versions?...they fall in price like a rock!
Strategy, competition, sales, market demands, number of units available at any given time, mainboard manufacturers ect all play a great part in when an upgrade to a product can be made available.
AMD and Mainboard manufacturers, ram designers ect all have to recieve some renumeration for their efforts, or the products we buy would not be carefully designed and tested. Some companies would not be able to compete, and go belly up. Those that can withstand the cost, would have to charge mega bucks for their products.
I'm sure you wouldn't want to be buying a new mainboard, ram, video ect everytime a new processor upgrade came out if it hit the streets every few months.
AMD has done quite well in the past, helping the average guy and family own a computer. If it were not for their low cost technology, computers would still be in the $3000 to $4000 buck range like it was in the early to mid 1990s.
Understand a bit better?

That's right. And there is not a big demand for faster processors right now. Gamers, servers, and high end video editors can use them, but not the average user, which is what drives demand. Hardware has passed software.

The dreaded 1990s. I needed at least $4K for a decent computer. Now $1K will do it.
