Just recieved an email from a friend that 'thinks' he has a problem using a firewall ,and Norton Antivirus.

He didn't give me all of the particulars, so I can't say for sure here about what firewall, or version of NAV he is using.

He recently changed over from a 56K line connect to cable RR service. I don't know if this has anything to do with this situation or not, but decided to add what few particulars I am aware of. He has not mentioned such as this before, when he had a phoneline connect...probably a coinsidence.

His plight is this. Everytime he wants to check email, his firewall wants to let MAV access the internet. If he says no...he dosn't get to access the internet to check mail. If he says yes, then alls fine.

His concern is that why should Norton AV need to access the internet so that he can check email?

I certainly do not know, and I also have ZoneAlarm as well as NAV...but, my NAV never wants to access the net. In my ZA firewall, only Norton Live Update is there..nothing else...perhaps it should be?.

I wrote him back, and said I didn't know, but probably NAV is configured on his machine to check emails before they are downloaded or as they are being downloaded.

Any thoughts here?

Tnx

That sounds about right. You might have him check his configuration of Nav and set it to not check the email, see if it still asks afterward.

I have NAV and Zonealarm, you are right Nav is trying to check his mail if he wants NAV to check his mail then he should click yes
if not he should set NAV not to check his e mail.

He must be using norton 2001 av with Email protection turned on. What it does is accesses your pop3 email (Internet) so it can scan your email PRIOR to it actually getting to your computer. Then if everything checks out ok it then "forwards" the email on to your computer.

Ditto all previous statements with these additions:

I use NAV2001 and ZoneAlarm. I allow norton to scan my mail (have caught several bugs with it- useful) and allow its other monitoring features, but do not allow autodetect as it is bothersome and I can do manually. Should your friend decide to not let norton access his mail, he/she will need to alter the pop3 addresses as norton changes them at installation. Goodluck.
