Hi,
My system is:
ECS K7S5A, Athlon XP 2000+, 256 megs DDR pc2100, 40 Gigabyte HDD, XFX Geforce 4 MX440SE; Running on Windows 98SE and Detonator 43.00 Drivers.

Im getting perfect stability in all my other games (serious sam 1 & 2, SoF2, SoF, MOHAA, MOHAASH, Elite force, Quake 3, So on, so forth..) and they're running at perfectly respectable speeds.

However I recently purchased Thief 2 from Soldout Software.. It installs perfectly, and if you try to run it without the CD, it asks for the CD. However as soon as you insert the CD, or if you already had the CD prepared, before the game even starts windows dies with a General Protection Fault :(

If anybody has any ideas as to the problems, id appreciate the help, I have no idea what might be wrong.. just for info, the same copy runs flawlessly one my brothers computer (ECS K7SEM with onboard grfx, 256 megs SDRAM, and a 1300 Duron)

Instructions to resolve GPF problem:

1) Make sure you're using the latest videocard drivers.
2) Clean your CD-ROM drive
3) Dust out your computer - this step is crucial!
4) Uninstall Thief II and promptly deliver the game box to the nearest incinerator.
5) Go back to playing Theif I... that game ruled.

Not much help, I know... ;)

I didn't have the best experience with Thief II either. Alternate (and equally unhelpful) solutions:

1) Reformat, and reinstall EVERYTHING. Change the rings on your toilets while you're at it.
2) Beat up your brother and use his computer. Come on, he's your brother... it's not just your right - it's your duty.
3) I'm fresh outta ideas.

Better luck with the next post :p :t
