My experience has been Win98se and Win2K utilize memory pretty much the same. 128MB is really adequate for memory. You may be running many programs that you do not use when you "boot up" or power on your computer and Windows is loaded. One thing you can do to reduce the number of programs being loaded at startup is to click on Start - Run - (type) msconfig - Enter. A screen will appear. Select Selective Startup. Then choose only those programs you want loaded automatically when Windows starts. Un-choose by clearing the boxes next to the unecessary programs. Then click Apply, then you will be prompted to reboot your computer.
You should notice a difference on amount of memory / system resources available. Please post your results.

i use win98 se. i only have a check next to scan registry and system tray for startup. i checked in system resouces and system & user & gdi were all at 92%. at system monitor allocated memory- 119.9m. unsed physical memory-65.4m. not sure how to check for how much actual ram is being used. i used first aid to check the first time i posted. when i check using first aid this time it was 72.5mb of ram used. i only had sysopt opened. when i checked earlier i had over 10 pages open and running musicmatch. hope this is enough info. is my system running at optimal performence. robin

i have duron 800 asus a7v 133 system. physical memory 128mb windows is using 127.24mb user resources free 70% gdi resources free 41% what can i do to speed up my system. i am new at computers so i need a little detail.

What version of Windows are you using? 128 mb is fair for Win98, but I understand the WinME and 2K need more. (I run Win98, and don't know for sure)

You may also need a memory manager like MemTurbo or Cacheman.
