cment,

It is fairly simple to put seti on a linux box. After you have downloaded seti for linux, put it in a directory where you wish to run it from. Do this as root or you will need to put it in your own home directory.

run the seti program that you downloaded and fill out the inital info. After it downloads a wu press enter and the seti windows will disappear. it will be running in the background. you can check it by using the command "top" from the prompt. after the inital setup start seti using an & after it. Example "seti-i386 &" With the & the program will automatically go into the background.

rraehal,
I have tried to run it in under my user. I unpack the file and seti@home is right there. I click it and it can't find seti@home. I don't get it. Just have to learn this. Its quite a bit different.

Hi cment. Okay I got lucky and it was VERY easy for me to install and get SetiAtHome running on my system. You've gotten as far as unpacking the file but when you click the icon nothing happens...

Same for me. So what you need to do is open a console window and run it from there (did you get my Email where I discribed how to do this?)

Run it by typing './setiathome &'. (that dot slash at the front tells the OS to look in the current directory [yes, it's a little strange...you can be in the directory and try to execute a program and it will say it can't find it!] The ' &' at the end tells it to run in the background.)

Fill in your email address and you'll be good to go. This is assuming that you arn't behind a proxy. If you are, look in the Readme file for options or ask here and we'll get you through it.

-Mike

Tallking about new. It won't let me change directories. ie, cd /(dir) when I am in the terminal window . That is probably wrong I am sure. Says no such file or directory. I can see the SETI directory tho. Confusing to say the least:) I like this though, seems so much more stable and fast for even a AMD 450 :D

Talking about something too simple. Yes cd / to change certain directories, but if your in your home dir and see the dir then you don't have to use the /, just ensure that you have the case correct. Got the client running and using seti watch to keep an eye on it. Thanks for all the help so far.

Once I get some time I have about 20 or so PII-266 & PII-300 systems that I'll be loading Linux on. Their main task will be proxy servers, but I'll run SETI on them too. I used to have SCO Un*x running the entire place with Wyse terminals on serial lines a long time ago and I had an Apollo DN460 workstation at home for awhile. I'm familar with Un*x, but it's been so long that I've forgotten a lot.
