I recently updated my son's computer with a new motherboard, video card and more memory. Every game he tries to play either crashes to windows or locks up. Until the crash, the video display is choppy, even a the lowest resolutions. Same results when running on software, OpenGL, and Direct3d. The games he's tried are HalfLife, Mechwarrior 4, and Falcon 4.0. The system specs are: Shuttle AK39N mainboard, Radeon 9100 128mb AGP vid card, 512mb RAM, 26gb HDD, 40X cdrom, Windows 98SE. Bios was updated, all latest drivers for vid card installed, DirectX 9. Game patches downloaded and installed. The games run fine on my buddies much older, slower machine. Any suggestions? I'm losing what's left of my hair over this. Thanks.

Did you re-install The OS after changing parts?

Especially if the motherboard has a different chipset.

Yes. We ran fdisk, format, reloaded W98, all driver updates, and patches.

This sounds so much like the vid card drivers that I must say double check on that.

Maybe DirectX 9 isn't mature enough yet. Old OS, old card... you know.
Can you try to install the latest version of DirectX 8 instead ? I believe that's 8.1a.

Try another video card or remove the new memory stick. This machine was working with no problems before the video card and memory upgrade, right? So you have to suspect either the video card or memory upgrade.

To test your memory, go to http://www.memtest86.com/ and follow the instructions. It will make a bootable floppy.

I too would suspect the video drivers or ram. I didn't see what cpu and hsf you are using.

I'm kinda late getting into this, but which 4 in 1's did you use? And when you say "latest" drivers, which ones are those?? There are settings in the bios and in windows that can choke a system, or set it free, it all depends. I'm leaning towards the mobo and bios. If you have it solved by now, please post it here, it's always interesting to know the solution. :t
