If somebody know what Harddisk its better and why, please e-mail me. Fingers 05-15-2001, 08:04 PM http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/006431.html 7200rpm drives spin faster than 5400 drives so the fasterRPM drives usually transfer data to and from the computer faster than slower RPM drives. ATA66 and ATA100 are newer standards for getting the data from the HDD to the computer faster but the problem is that few hard drives are even fast enough to take full advantage of even the older ATA33 standard. You won't see any performance difference between ATA33/66/100, but a 7200rpm drive might be noticebly faster than an 5400. Roy 05-17-2001, 12:16 AM I have to disagree with Fingers on the data burst speed issue. I noticed how much faster things were when I changed from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm on an ATA 33 system. Then I got a new mobo that took advantage of ATA100 and was surprised at another advance in performance. Everything from booting to defragging to cloning is noticeably faster. I prefer Western Digital drives. They're cool and reliable. Brangwen 05-18-2001, 09:34 AM Ah, the good ole Search tool at Sysopt: For ALL (most?) of your benchmark needs, see: www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/009659.html (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/009659.html) Included in the above link is HD Tach so you can actually measure and compare various HDD configurations, should you be so inclined! Good luck! Brangwen http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif My personal observation is a drive spinning at 7200rpm is faster at handling data (retrieval, saving) than one spinning at 5400rpm, ATA not-with-standing. Brangwen 05-18-2001, 09:42 AM Oh, man. I provided some far out (though interesting) links, but Sisoft Sandra may be the only helpful one. Look at this explanation and test beteen a couple different ATA values and different rpm devices. www.hwupgrade.com/hd/ata66_vs_ata33/index.html (http://www.hwupgrade.com/hd/ata66_vs_ata33/index.html) Brangwen http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Brangwen 05-18-2001, 09:47 AM heres another good discussion: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/008729.html and finally link to HD Tach: http://www.zen.co.uk/home/page/graham.thompson/gweb/hdtach.htm Good luck... I've got to get to work! Brangwen http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Roy 05-19-2001, 12:11 AM Yo! Brangwen! How 'bout that good ol' Edit tool at SysOpt? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Yar1182 05-19-2001, 12:24 AM I'd get the higher RPM over a higher ATA drive. Just because the drive is rated at ATA 100 does not mean it transers data at 100 MB. It just means in the best conditions, in a short unsubstained burst, it CAN hit 100 MB. Truth is no matter what ATA you get it will probably average 33 MB. When the new serial ATA standard comes out we'll see some real substained speed.
