I just bought Gladiator on DVD. It's cool! except about half way through the screen goes blank, the DVD drive blinks a few times, and my system reboots! It happens on chapter 14 "I shall cheer for you". I can skip that part and go to a later chapter. but then I miss a bunch of the DVD! None of my other DVDs do this. I've cleaned the DVD, my drive, and my kitty. But nothing seems to work!

My specs are (I'm running the DVD off my computer)
Pentium 3 600Mhz
GVC/BCM GT693VA mobo (VIA chipset)
192Mbs of pc-100 mem @133Mhz
12X AOpen DVD (the drive the problems occure with)
52X Delta CD-rom
Soundblaster 64PCI
Creative Labs GeForce DDR with DX8 (The GF does the DVD assist)
Win98 SE

Should I return it (I'm trying despratly to find the recpit http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif ?
Thanks!

No. I only have the one DVD player, and I don't know any one else that owns one.

I checked the disk (visually) and didn't see anything wrong. But I had a feeling it was a bad disk. Lets hope I can find the recpit! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Playing DVDs and VCDs on a personal computer isn't an exact science. Sometimes the disc is fine, but may require another player.

I have both ATI DVD Player and Power DVD 3.0. Power DVD does a better job at manipulating the picture size, so I prefer it. But it won't play everything. Sometimes, it won't play "cheap" DVDs that I get in the discount bin.

ATI DVD Player is very stagant about the picture size. But will play anything. But sometimes (even very expensive) DVDs will lock up in the beginning. I have to use the PLAY menu, go to the second scene, and back it up to start the movie. It will then play just fine!

Maybe you can try that bridge. Go past the anomoly and back up!

I had the exact same problem with a DVD - the title escapes me - I just couldn't get past a certain chapter - the system would reboot all by itself - occasionally, it would get stuck in a rebooting cycle, and I'd have to kill the power entirely in order to boot.

I'm using the Creative 12x DVD with the TV out card (dxr3 i think). I went round and round with this, thinking perhaps I had a heat problem, or that my power supply was going south. I finally stumbled upon a newsgroup posting - the guy had the same problem, and uninstalled Creative's disc dectector program - This didn't make any sense to me - but the next time it happened - my pc got into another rebooting loop - I removed the DVD and it booted fine - so I uninstalled the Disc detector program - voila no more problems.

See if your DVD has the latest firmware. Update your bios...see if there are new drivers or software patches. One thing many people don't realize is that a DVD is software...kinda. Its not like a VCR tape. Soem DVD players don't liek teh double sided discs either. **** these things are picky! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif I have the same problem with my playstation 2 playing matrix and pitch black.

I'll head over to AOpen for some new DVD drivers.

As for double sided problems and what not. My DVD drive has no problems with any of that stuff! I have Jason and the Argonoughts on DVD (It's double sided), and it works fine. I think it's the disk though.

While you're at AOpen, check for new firmware as well. Maybe that will do the trick.

Ok I tried updating my drives firm ware (drive model: DVD1240/AMH Current Firmware: R05). But it keeps giveing me an error saying its the wrong drive? It detects both my AOpen and Delta drives. But it won't update my AOpen. (by the way the firm ware I'm trying to update it to is RO6)

O well. I'll return the movie (I'm pretty sure it is the movie any way), and see what happens. I'll keep you posted!
