I have a comp that I'm selling tomorrow and wanted to run defrag on it first its like a 3gig HDD so it should help greatly. But when i run defrag it gets to 3% then goes back to 0% over and over and..... Well what is causing it? It is Windows ME and I have turned off McAfee anti-virus and there should be no spyware as it hasn't been on the web yet.
Thanks.:t

I had same prob with my laptop. Ran DEFRAG, but it kept getting as far as 17% and then back to 0%.
At the time I did'nt know whether that was normal or not so I let it be.
After three hours or so of waiting it completed successfully.
So maybe if you give it a bit more time, you may be able to run Defrag without having to use safe mode.
Better again set your puter to defrag once a week during bed time)-| )-|
Regular Defrags take less time :t

there's a free version of diskeeper called diskeeper lite that I use atm, and I know that I will upgrade, just to use the advanced features... so much better and faster than MS Defrag...:D

i work for my school tech department, I'm an admin and all that jazz....
I remember this one time earlier this year when we decided to defrag all of our machines at once...it was Windows 98....the next day, when we returned(we let it run overnight), out of the twenty computer we ran defrag on, seventeen(17) died....(these comps hadn't been defragged ever...we wanted to see how long they would last without a defrag)....
they were defragged with the MS defag prgm better known as MS degrade program....
so we ghosted them all
If you have kazza, you also can download Diskeeper from there.

SHHHHH
I'll pretend i didnt hear that :x
I quite like speed disk in Norton utils, simply because it allows you to actually do thigns and use the machine while its defragging, rather than having to wander around for an hour or so waiting

your better off picking them up OEM from online distrubutor like Directron. just bouyght Norton Ghost for $10. how much is that really? makes them want to keep making good programs.
have seen this program on peer to peer but buying a real cd for cheap is much better
