Just wondering if it's possible to run Athlon XP's on older 200FSB boards. I 've got the Gigabyte 7IXE4, max setting is 115Mhz and no multiplier settings available.
Would the underclock cause instability ? I read one guy's post who was able to install AthlonXP 1800 , underclocked to 1380mhz and it runs fine. Any suggestion what would be the best XP to get for this ?
Right now, the 200FSB 1.4 T-Birds (max on this board) run almost $100 on ebay, while slower XP's are just $40-50, so I thought it could be a good solution until i can muster the cash for a shinning new Barton and new MB... (now I run 800@920 T-bird)
Thanks !

Sure, you can run a 133mHz ("266 DDR") CPU on an older 100mHz ("200 DDR") mobo. Be forewarned, your mobo's BIOS may not be able to recognize the CPU identity, and may not be able to take advantage of newer CPU instructions sets (such as SSE, for example).
I presume, you just want to U/G the CPU now, and expect to U/G the mobo in the near future?
If so, I'd get the mobo now (they drop in price more slowly than CPUs do), and get the CPU second, as you'll be able to get more processing power per dollar if you wait a bit.
www.newegg.com has a 1.2gHz/200 TBird for $35, and a 1.3gHz/200 Duron for $39.

Even if you can run it, what a waste. Why don't you just spring for a new mobo. Even a K7S5A would be an improvement. If you really don't want to get a new mobo, then why not get a Duron. You can probably get a 1.4GHz Duron cheap, and you won't be wasting the processor's potential because the FSB is "200" (well, 100MHz, DDR actually).

yeah, you are both right, it is a waste of power...
maybe i go different direction, get a new MB (nforce2,333FSB) and DDR memory and just wait for Bartons to go down in price.
Maybe I 'll even be able to overclock my dinky 800mhz Athlon to 1K if I have multiplier settings on the new mobo. Plus, I am already having trouble with new hardware, my new video card is running only at 1x AGP and can't get any higher.
If money were not the problem, I would get a whole new setup, I guess i just have to do it piece by piece...but then it better be top of the line....
Thanks for the suggestions !
