Hi all !!I have a second hand puter which has an extra brand new drive in it left by the original owner as he couldnt figure out how to get it to work .Im trying to get that drive to work but cant seem to do so.Everytime i autodetect the drive (which is detected fine as a slave)and try to boot up it hangs up.The only way then to get it to boot is to again remove the drive in the BIOS settings .
Heres the boot sequence

CPU Pent 200 mhz
640k system RAM passed
64152k extended RAM passed
EDO memory detected
512k cache SRAM passed
syetem BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
Fixed disk 0:fast PIIO mode 4 WPC AC32100H
Fixed disk 1:fast PIO mode 4 Maxtor 90720DS(this is the new hard drive ..this line only shows up if i set the drive in AUTO mode nad not USER mode)
PS/2 mouse initialized
after this line just before the strting windows 95 is to show up the puter hangs up with a beep and the floppy LED remains on
I tried disconnecting the drive by removing the slave connnection but strangely it still fails to boot up!!
Can someone pleeeeeez help!!Ill be extremely grateful.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

puter_nerd:

Remove the drive that boots. Jumper the drive you're having trouble with as Master, and try booting with boot disk in floppy drive. Then follow the onscreen support, i.e., CDROM Support, with Operating System CD in CDROM, and follow onscreen prompts.

PS1: did you format the new drive?

PS2: Make certain your jumpers are set correctly, and that your cables are properly attached (secure and cable pin one to pin one, etc.)

Good luck.

Dear brangwen.
Thank you for your reply.Iam not too familiar with the hardwre part of puters and just until recently i thought the jumper was remnant of the broken end of a cable and was abt to throw it away but fortunately after the puter didnt boot up(and i got quite a scare on that one.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif )i figured it had some more important function to perform and put it back.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Ive been reading up on jumpers since tehn and i figured out why it is needed but not how many.I have a jumper on my slave in the CS position .I m fairly sure my jumper settings r the problem here and i will try out ure advice. What i need to knw is whether i need more then one jumper on my slave which is a maxtor hard drive. Also how many should there be on the master? Can u tell me the positions and number of slaves needed.
Thanks a lot for your kind consideration.

You need to jumper your drive as slave, NOT as CS (cable select). If the jumper positions aren't marked on the drive, go to the Maxtor site and look it up.

dear cedar,
I checked out the maxtor site)http://www.maxtor.com/Quantum/support/hdd/hdd_faq_support.htm#Start) already and here is
hwt it says

Jumper Configuration
On a Quantum ATA drive there are three possible jumper configurations. They are as follows:

1)Master (Drive Select):Set the jumper in the DS position. The Drive Select scheme is typically used for systems that support Ultra ATA/33 (UDMA 2) transfer modes or slower and are connected to a standard 40-pin / 40-conductor ATA data cable.

2)Slave (Drive Select):No jumper is set for DS Slave. You may however place the jumper in the PK (park) position for jumper storage (shown).

3)Cable Select:Both Master and Slave drives require a jumper to be installed in the CS position. The drive's position on the data cable will determine whether the drive is a Master or a Slave. The Cable Select scheme is used for systems that support Ultra ATA/66 (UDMA 4) transfer modes or faster and are connected to a 40-pin / 80-conductor Ultra ATA data cable. Ultra ATA cables will typically have color-coded connectors (see Data Cable section for more detail).

So i have teh jumper in the CS position as it says.
Did i follow the instructions wrong?
Thanx for ure help.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
