I have got everything working on my new puter exept the floppy disk. It worked before but now it doesn't..go figure?? Ok, it is in the little window in My Computer and when you click on it the green light comes on and it makes the noise like there is no disk in it for a few seconds and says cannot read from specified device..even if I put a disk in it it still does it no matter what. It doesn't recognize it in dos either. I type in a:\ and it grinds on it for a second and says abort, retry, fail. Why is this thing doing this? The driver is for a GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK, and the floppy controller is a Standard Floppy Controller. How can the light come on and it make the noise but not work? Man..if I ever get this problem solved this think will finally be complete!

Matt, I have had simular things happen to a floppy drive. Usually, when trying to read a disk with data on it, or maybe even a new diskette...Windows will say something like the fisk is not formatted, and do I want to format it?. What this is, the read calibration is out of whack, and its reading (or trying to) between the formatted tracks on the disk. Yours could have been mis handled a little, and the read arm is now a little off calibration. This can be less than 1/4th mm because the tracks are thin, and closely spaced on the diskette.
The only other thing I can think of at the moment is, the drive has gone belly up, and cannot read anything.
One very slim possibility is, replace the ribbon cable. I have had some of these right out of the box that were defective...and if one of the wires isn't making a good contact in the socket...it could cause a read failure...
