Unfortunately all winmodems were not created equal. I don't think the drivers are interchangeable. Your modem is really working fine. However, you can try one of the speed-up modem accelerators such as i-speed or netoptimizer. Good luck!

No, you cannot use Rockwell drivers on Lucent modems.
The basic difference between a "hard" modem and a wimodem is one chip. The "hard" modem has all the data analog to digital and digital to analog conversion chips right on it. A winmodem relies on your CPU to do it, and only has a small data pump chip on it.

Winmodems use software to carry out many of the functions that on a standard, or 'hardware', modem are carried out by physical components on the modem itself. Since the Winmodem therefore needs less components, this keeps the cost down but the disadvantage is that using software to perform functions tranfers the work onto the CPU. Thus Winmodems need a powerful PC. Also, the software typically runs only in Windows (hence the name 'Winmodem) although some are provided with DOS software as well.

The drain on CPU resources can be a particular disadvantage in online gaming, possibly the cause of the problem that Bigslammer is experiencing. Winmodems also, by and large, tend to have more incompatibility problems than standard modems and, on the whole, are more likely to lose a connection.

Drivers are not interchangeable.

EDIT~ Comtech beat me to it! Have I got it right, Comtech?

Comtech and DavidX are correct!

If you can afford to get a "hard" modem do so as they will be the best bang for the buck and they are also much easier to install and troubleshoot when and if the need arises.

Thats my 2 cents on the subject

I was wondering if I could improve the performance of my winmodem by using 3com's drivers for the the rockwell chip on my lucent winmodem or would these two be incompatible. I know I should get a "hard" modem but I'm waiting for g.lite modems to become less expensive. Currently I conect at 52 kbps or 50.6 kbps (good but I'm impatient) and download at 51 kbps but the ping on is too high when I play games. any suggestions?

chad174 you should go to lucent.com to download driver 553, it has certainly improved my performance for downloading pages and files(almost to the max 53bps) but as you can see not video games.
