I just read the replies on the guy asking about what is a good free firewall that won't slow down his system and in the answers was the comment about ZoneAlarm snafuing the system when trying to uninstall. This now has me worried as I have it installed on my WinXP home version. With what was said I would like to try sygate but now am afraid to uninstall ZoneAlarm. Can you please tell me what kind of problems I will run into so I can decide whether I want to uninstall it or not. My home computer is the only thing I have ZoneAlarm on and have a cable connection. No big network just my one machine. But I would like to know what I have gotten myself into by installing ZoneAlarm on my personal computer.
Thanks.

Ok - Just try uninstalling first - it seems to be worse in windows2000 for me personally. I removed it and then all hell broke loose - no dns - no web access - i just reinstalled and all was ok again. In my case I had to do some registry diving to completely remove it. Ive had the same problem now on at least three other users machines all win2k.
From what other users have told me they seem to have no problems in win9x - its just win2k and possibly XP.
If you have win9x and get problems its simply a case of using scanreg from dos and restoring the registry to a point before the install which you really should create before any major piece of software is installed (but which most users fail to do - your first major disaster will make sure you never forget in future - been there - learned my lesson well - very well)
- with XP its a restore point - personally i dont like using restore points - even restore itself as it takes a lot of disk space and is just another service consuming memory that i dont need but I doubt many users actually use it.
Suck it and see.
If all else fails the guys on here are pretty s&$% hot...

Peoples' ZoneAlarm mileage varies...
Personally, I've had ZA and ZAPro on pcs running W98se, WMe, W2KPro and WXPPro... even dual boot W98se/W2K and W98se/XPPro... with ZAPro on each OS.
Have installed/uninstalled on all these... never had any problems either installing, using or uninstalling ZA or ZAPro.
Curious: ZA is a very good software firewall. All software firewalls have good and bad points. If you have ZA already installed, and it is working for you, why would you feel complled to remove it?
