The original version had NO in-game saves available.
Does IGI 2 have in game saves?

Yes, but it is a limited amount of saves.

Thats ok, I liked the first game, but sometimes couldnt play a mission through start to finish w/out the need to save. [sometimes had only 20-30 minutes of play time].
Is IGI 2 similar to the original in regards to gameplay/graphics/weapons?

Yeah, expcept its much more stealth orientated and you can onyl carry one primary weapon and one pistol. Having said that the AI has still remained idiotic so you can set up killign zones and have a right royal ruck. Not as difficult as the first one though IMo as you can just lure em into a doorway and anihhilate the whole base then run areound unhindred
