This id the first time I've ever fooled around in sysedit and would like to know if I did this right. I have 320 MB pc100 sdram and decided to try what I saw posted here about cuting down on heavy swap file use. I went looking for the line 386enh, and I edited it this way:
386enh
conservativeswapfileusage=1
it rebooted ok, so maybe I did it right. thanks
I believe the capitals make a difference for the edit...
It should be:
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

ok, thanks, i'll go back in and change it
ok change it like you said, now how do I tell if it's useing the ram instead of virtual memroy still?

Use the System Monitor.... if it isn't installed, install it through add/remove program...

cool! it's using the ram now. thanks guys..
This is the most noticeable speed increasing tweak I ever used. It even helps high memory systems.

NDC: will this also work if you only got 128MB? thats whats in my other P-2 266 and the kids 233mmx. thanks again.
Yes, it will. This command line is simply telling the OS to use as much of the Physical RAM as possible before it uses the Page File...When there isn't any physical RAM for the OS to use, it will simply use the page file... It won't hurt the performance at all using this option on any system...

Ok it seems NDC has answered this question already (sorry if this is a waste of space)..
Would this also work/should i bother with this on my old P133 with 72MB Ram (EDO) ?.
If YES, could you tell me where i can find this in the registry ? (im using win98se).
Thanks,
cm.
Yes, it will work....
1) Go to run and type sysedit
2) In system.ini, go down to the line where it says [386Enh].
3) Just below that line, type in ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 (no spaces in between.)

Okay, now, Why does this speed things up?
It's gonna speed things up since RAM is perhaps 100+ times faster than hard disk. The above line you add to the system.ini file will force windows to use as much of the Physical RAM as possible before it turns to the hard disk to write to the "Page File" (a.k.a: Virtual Memory). Page File is used by Windows when there isn't enough Physical Memory to perform the task. When you don;t have the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1, it won't use all of the Physical RAM before it turns to the Page File... thereforer making system performance un-optimized.
Hope this explained for you, RLT65.

Woohoo http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif My Unused Physical memory went from 9.6 megs to 106.4 megs once I changed that line. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif This a great tweak. Thakns for posting it orginally, whoever did http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
