I am thinking of using usb cd rom and in my travels on the internet saw a product that says that it will convert any cd-r or cd-rw rom drive to usb thereby making it mobile. Does anyone know how this is done and does it work?

I saw the product on TigerDirect.com.

Only thing I've ever seen was at Fry's Electronics.
All it pretty much is, is an external cdrom case (sleeve), with an adapter to the usb port. The cdrom gets installed into the case and thats it.
I don't remember the price, cause it was like 2 years ago when I've last gone to Fry's.
Don't have one in Oklahoma.
