i was just looking around on new egg a few minutes ago, and found 128 mb pc2100 ram for $17. not bad, with shipping its $23. right now i have 256mb of ram, and i've really been wanting to upgrade something on my computer. on my list to upgrade is my cpu (current - 900mhz t-bird), my gfx(current - msi geforce3 ti200 64mb), and my ram (current 256mb). the only thing keeping me back is money, because i've been putting it towards my car. BUT - i just found about $40 in my closet!! so....how much will 128mb ram help me? i mostly just look at stuff on the internet, but i also play diablo2, unreal tourny demo, unreal tourny 2k3 demo, gta3, and i've also been wanting c&c generals and sim city4. (im running win98 se) ..so my choices are:
•get ram, still have about $10 left over
•dont get ram, save for car
•dont get ram and save for cpu/geforce 4

so..whadd'ya think?

edit -http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=20-140-003 thats the ram i saw

I think the definitive descision here is , How are you doing saving for the car (big expense)? Using the PC the way you do, 256 ram on Win98se is more than adequate, your video card isn´t a dog either. I would opt for the car because it is going to be tough to pass up bargains for PC´s and other things to finally save enough for it.

pauloh22 - if I were you, I'd get a new cpu - if your motherboard will support a newer one, of course. :)

i have 98se and on last computer i gradually upped memory fron 128 to 256 to 384 and it really didnt seem to make a bit of performance differance, just allowed me to pretty much get rid if swap file, sometimes 32 mb now, not very often.

am currently running with 512 and same thing as above, except ive never seen swap file over 0

for $40 you could probably find a 10 gig hd online, give you more room (a little anyway, can never have to much room):D

:t

sorry, read to quick, didnt see choices, for $40 you cant get a fast enough cpu to make much of an upgrade, memory wont really help either.
which leaves, save for car :(

or get HD:)

I would pop a 1.3 Duron in there if the mobo supports it.

You can get 256Mb of Kingston PC2700 at newegg for $31. Other than that, I dunno. Even the cheapest Duron - on price watch - is $36. Doesn't allow much room for shipping... and it's OEM...

Office Depot Online is selling 256 mb PC2100 for $20 shipped. Always remember that a car will cost you big time: the purchase price, the insurance, the registration, the gasoline, the maintenance and upkeep. A car is a financial black-hole and will swallow a huge amount of money, much more than you think. I envy those that have learned to live without one.

save for the car.

memory upgrade won't help you that much.

And chicks dig d00ds with a vehicle. ;)

edit: X51out, I browsed Officedepot's site, yet cannot find the 256Meg DDR for $20. Care to post a link?
And you've a point about envying people who manage WITHOUT a car. My wife & I managed for over 1.5 years with just my car, but ended up buying another one about 5 months ago.

They're financial black holes, but necessary in many cases.

Go for the 1.3 Duron like BPB said if your mobo can take it.
