Can someone possibly tell me what sound chip is onboard on the 8rda+ board, the manual labels the sound chips as simply being AC(7 codecs, is this true in the case of the + version or not? Is the soundchip actually nvidias Soundstorm thingamiajiga

Oh goodie, i thought so. From what my manual reads all it mentions is AC97 thats what confused me. Might just pass my Blaster PCI512 down to my dad now.

well ... you always, always, always have a codec to go with the chipset's audio solution. Codecs do the analog/digital conversion and in/out channel switching, and need a digital sound engine to do the actual work.
The standard bus that connects engines to codecs is AC97. That says nothing about the quality of the engine nor about the codec.
This is true no matter what it is - primitive stereo from an Intel chipset, an Audigy card or NVidia chipset audio, they all use AC97 bus to connect their codecs.
So, wrong question :)

The epox uses the MCP-T chip for sound. Peter explained the codec deal already. Anyhow NO Epox isnt soundstorm certified even though it has all the same hardware and it wont be either utill they change one thing. Epox makes ya pay for the SPIDF connector as a add in card. No biggy to us but its enuff to keep it from being SoundStorm certified. When they implement it onboard like ASUS did or include it with mobo then it will pass. Till then its the same without the logo-no big deal really.
