This may sound dumb but do I have to install sp1 before sp2 or does sp2 contain all the fixes in 1?

Just SP2 is all you need...but beware, it is still beta as of now.

SP2 is no more a Beta, it's Final and it's here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000platform/sp/sp2/nt5/en-us/w2ksp2.exe) ... You don't need SP1 anymore.
