Who makes these drives for CompUSA. Are they reliable? Quiet?
Anyone out there have experience with them?

If you look at the box, it will either have Made by Maxtor (somewhere on the box) or it will say DiamondMax Plus (which is made by Maxtor).

yes, they are maxtor Diamond Max 9 Plus'.

This means that they should have Fluid Dynamic Bearings instead of Ball Bearings (quieter and no high pitch noise)

9ms seek time with 2MB cache and less with the 8MB

Shock Protection for when the drive is turned on. Still don't shake or jar the drive though

Data Protection

Acoustic Noise Management is settable. This means that if you have a intel chipset and you install Intel Application Accelerator, you can change the Read Write head speed to be maximum performance with Noise management off (Loudest
Max performance with Noise Management on (quieter but slower)
Max Quiet (Can't hear it unless next to ear, slowest)

There is no real degredation in performance as I can tell, and Maxtor Drives are very good. I have the Maxtor DMax+9 80GB 7.2k RPM drive.

I didn't get the CompUSA version cause the Maxtor was cheaper at the time.

Maxtor is a very reliable drive in my experiences

You get that price after the rebate. I took it to the checkout and it rang up: $164.

OUCh. My 80 Gig, 7200 RPM Maxtor from Newegg.com cost me $101.00 and it had free shipping. It was OEM though. It came in a White Box with my memory and my Artic Silver 3. It was in an ESD Bag so that was a +. I would kill them till they die if it wasn't.

Did you get the one with the 8MB cache? That's what this one is. Not that it justifies CompUSA's pricing.

No, I got the 2MB cache. Wish I could have gotten the 8MB though.

As for the CompUSA rebate deal, I had a bad experience with them. I had a $50.00 rebate take over three months and several letters/faxes/phone calls before they would send me my check. I'd suggest thinking of it as a $164.00 drive with the good possibility of a $94.00 check in two or three months.
