first a short intro:
my system is iwill kk400, athlon xp 1900, coolermaster xdream hsf 5000rpm, 16 mb nvidia agp, 60gb 7200 maxtor, 80 gb 7200 maxtor, 32/16/32 cdrw, 16/40 dvd, 512 pc 2700, 400w ps, generic case
i have modded the case and put a blowhole on top plus another fan directly behind cpu/hsf, these fans are 2500 rpm apiece both blowing out.
i later added another fan on front in bottom to help get some air in. after this i was looking at case a realized since it had a window there really werent any air holes on side so maybe more air was blowing out than could be replaced adequatley (no, i dont suppose vaccuum created but you get idea).
i then drilled a series of holes in a AMD logo pattern in both bottom corners, 14 holes per corner 3/16" apiece. my system temp is 36c and cpu temp 46c
my question (finally):D
i have a slot mount case fan i can add as well.
are these good for cooling really?
i mean, its at bottom, all the heat is on top. im already getting rid of heat at source. can you perhaps change the wiring ( i.e. plug in backwards) to make the slot fan blow in not out
just curious, have tried differant configs with other fans to achieve results so far. would appreciate input as to whether slot fan would help or not, im thinking it will cancel out blowhole and keep heat trapped more in middle of case
thus the question
nothing is really overclocked, thats the reason i started thread here, correct me if in error

I had a slot fan, and I wanted to convert it to an intake fan, so i reversed the wires. I had my computer opened on the floor with the slot fan in my hand and plugged in. I turned on the comp and about 10 seconds later the computer was smelling like a dentist's office so i turned off the comp. I smelt the fan and that's where the smell was coming from. The copper windings had been burnt up. The fan no longer worked after that and the fan permanently smells likes a dentist's office. Hope this helps :)

From what you have said I think you might have too much air racing(turbulence) around the case as it is.
What happens with the temp if you disable the blowhole fan?
The temps you gave seem a little high given all the cooling you have.
I'm running a 2100+ with temps 33c sys and 35C cpu.
All I have is psu fan exhausting.2 case fans blowing, plus the usual cpu fan on copper h's and vid card fan.
You might of already tried but I found by rearranging my HDD's,DVD,CDRW made a hell of a difference.
Temps dropped by 6C. I installed the deepest piece of hardware at the top of the case working down to the shallowest at the bottom.

cdrw in first bay, dvd in 3rd bay, both hd's on bottom. didnt put them on top of each other, have three empty bays in between, was worried about the 7200 heat generation.
i guess there could be a pretty warm area between cdrw and dvd, ill try moving dvd up.
moving hd on bottom up 2 bays might help also. will try :)
besides that, slot fan bad idea in your opinion? do i have sufficent airflow? seems like i should :)
by the way, thanx matt, ill skip trying that:D :t

Yeah as I said I reckon you have sufficent airflow already. What I was trying to say was that maybe with all those fans running instead of having an airstream from front to back or back to front the blowhole fan is creating turbulance in the case instead of a stream(if you get my drift).
So I think the card fan might make it worse imo.Why not plug it in and see?
Have a look at the gap between the edge of the vid card and whatever piece of hardware you have inline with it.That was the reason I suggested moving the hardware around.
What I have found is the bigger the gap between those two the better airflow you get.
First thing I would do if I were you would be to disable that blowhole fan and check temps.
cheers :t

ok, moved hd's down together and was wrong about cd drives, cdrw in 2nd bay dvd in 4th. moved em up, 1st and second now
disabled blowhole and removed fan in front of case.
results:
sys: 35c cpu: 46c
plugging in blowhole and will resend results
will get happy medium eventually. hmmm. blowhole down and slot fan out? not just yet

What grease/pad are you using between cpu and h/s?

the thermal compound that came with hsf, applied fairly thinly
should i lap it? (not tonight)
:)
okay, blowhole and no back fan sys:37c cpu:48c
plugging back fan in again, might try reversing it tomorrow

okay, side panel off
sys: 38c cpu: 43c
could just try removing window LOL :D

Depends on the quality of the h/s.these days all the ones I've seen are quite good/flat.
If you take off the h/s for any reason just check it with a steel rule or something similar to see if you can see any light between the two.
You say applied fairly thinly. very thin layer only.
Try front fan(down low) sucking.rear fans including psu fan exhausting.disable blowhole fan and test.then test with blowhole fan working.
I assume that all your cables/ribbons are routed neatly out of the way.
good luck :t

have idea
back fan is mounted to case against bunch of cut out holes.
putting hand on both sides of fan it feels like its blowing in more than out. think all metal between holes actually occupies more space than holes. blowhole modded by me blows out much air, back one, not so good.
dremel out hole possibly? just idea
yes, cables tucked away and round ribbon for hd's. thanks for help trouble, will post back tommorrow. i must go to bed
:t
sys: 37 cpu: 41
must be compound, will check in morning

yeah definately.the least restriction for the fans the better.

okay, sleepies gone from eyes
dremeled out back fan hole (screwed up threading on dremel putting flex shaft on, oh well), removed hsf to check thermal and it wasnt real thick on top but some had puddled around sides, might have actually been insulating sides of cpu. scraped of excess and spread rest real thin.
put everything back together and voila!
sys:32c cpu:42c (at 1728mhz)
much better. never started this thread hoping to get temps down but it is a welcome result. thanks for all your help trouble
am curious about slot fans still, anyone use or recommend them? work good if you got sufficient airflow coming in front of case?
