I need to install a new cd drive. Do I uninstall my 40X before installing a new drive or do I just install the new drive. When I tried to install a 52X drive, I seemed to have conflicts with my sound card and neither my cd rom drive nor my cd reader writer were recognized. What suggestions are available? Please be patient, I am over 60 and wore my current cd rom out playing games.

in most cases your operating system will just pick up cdrom's(hard drives, expansion cards...etc) at bootup so there normally isnt a need to remove them in device manager. thats what they mean by plug and play. just add what cdrom you want and make sure if you have something else on that same cable, that one of the devices is set to "slave" and the other to "master".
you should see the setting for that on the back of the drive next to where you connect it. there most likely is a jumper pin you can change to your specifications. good luck.

I think it was changed to Plug and Pray, since it doesn't work all the time, as it should.lol

Go into safe mode to the device manager and see how many times your cd roms and writers are listed. If it more than once per...remove them and then restart.
