They actually look efficient. Wonder how they perform. I like the FB-176 Barney 05-03-2001, 11:29 AM It's very efficient, but it doesn't cool (nearly) as well as the larger coolers. I think I saw it in one of the cooler reviews on Tom's Hardware. Roy 05-03-2001, 11:32 AM I just read a review (http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/heatsinks/zalman_coolers/index.htm) ... VERY POOR performance! It's "all show and no go"! Szech 05-03-2001, 11:45 AM Ah, the Zalman flower. The concept is good (Lots of copper plates = lots of surface area), but I suspect that the angle of the fins at the edges make it hard for air to flow over them. samwichse 05-03-2001, 11:50 AM Mabye if the fan was on the side somehow blowing though not over? jadison 05-03-2001, 11:58 AM very interesting, I haven't seen anything like it...are u sure it doesn't perform well? I see that it's not compatible with a heatsink fan http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif -=jd=- vintron 05-03-2001, 01:28 PM hey, i just said that they LOOK cute..... btw, thanks for the review link.... i still like them... they look soooo cuuute.... maybe we can use them to make silent pc's with out old cpu's (the below 300's) AuraEdge 05-03-2001, 01:42 PM They are made for quietness. If you put a huge high CFM fan instead of the default quiet 80mm fan, I bet it wouldnt do half bad. Also, The position of the fan is farther from the heatsink than most fans, so the heatsink is only getting a small taste of the wind from the fan. Fan position was probably the first reason that no one ever attempted to make a sink like this before. Ruahrc 05-03-2001, 10:27 PM What if you found a thin fan and sat it vertically in the space between the 2 rows of fins? Either that or mount a fan horizontally on it. It would work decent but not perfectly because of the odd shape of the HS. It seems like a fairly good sink though because of the incredible SA on it- lots of fins! Ruahrc rhino49 05-10-2001, 05:29 PM If you look at the install instructions, there is a fan on a bracket that attaches to the rear slot frame. Appears to suspend the fan over the cpu. This could be good if you needed quiet more than extra cooling. Szech 05-14-2001, 08:44 PM Hey, wait a minute... did you guys check out the 21 cooler review that was linked off the main page here? check this out: http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/r_socketa/page12.shtml The Zalman flower kept a Duron 600 1.9V at 51C under full load... with no fan. I'm pulling a 180 on this one! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif This heatsink is pretty nifty for passive cooling! Axel 05-15-2001, 10:23 AM If you're going to try this with no fan, then I'd definitely advise a micro-thin coat of thermal paste - otherwise I promise you - you'll toast something. Otherwise - get a fan and suspend it from the case with a bit of angle iron attached with liquid nails on an unpainted surface - then the thing should get downright cold. Very inspired design, but I think it needs a plastic hood leading to a draw fan to pull the heat out. Only problem I see is that there are some motherboards that seat the memory so close to the socket - or the IDE ribbons, that the fins could be a problem. You'd have to be really sure that the ribbon cables were rounded and secured back out of the way <<< they should be anyway for the sake of case air-flow. SysOpt.com
