I read the Forbes article on MRAM yesterday whilst waiting on my truck's oil change and had to know more.....

There are several contenders out there - one of the most promising contender is something Intel is working on called (sp) OVotronic RAM - a different concept.

As several of the big hitters are going with MRAM, and it promises to replace both DRAM and Flash RAM at the same time, and doesn't require power to retain it's pattern, I'm guessing it's going to start showing up in systems in the next 8 months or so even though the experts say it could be up to ten years....

The current challenges are size and production technique - size is too large and the production techniques currently working in the labs is too expensive and produces too much scrap to be economically viable....

I'm guessing IBM might get there first with HP and Motorola tying for a close second in development of this stuff. It has government funding because of it's potential use in military and space technology. As it doesn't require an electric charge to maintain it's data, it needs less shielding and is thus lighter and less prone to failure....

I'm buying more IBM stock..... This would boost their peripheral business and set the stage for more copper chip technology ales across the board as well.....
