Any advice on video editing hardware?

I just got a new video camera and would like to clean the videos up on the computer. Any recommendations on what the best way to do that is? I would like to be able to record the finished product on to VHS, but putting it on VCD is another option I suppose.

The camera is a sony miniDV, if that makes any difference. It does have a firewire out.
