Hello, I have a computer that has ata66 connection for the hard drive. I was wondering if I got the HIGH POINT ROCKET133SB Controller card with its own bios, if I could just plug in that card, with a brand new ata100ultra wd 7200 8mbcache HD, and have it boot up from the HIGH POINT ROCKET133SB PCI controller card, withought doing anything too technical?

You can, but you still have to get your data off of the old drive.

In Win9x/ME, it's easy. In Win2K/XP it ain't.

make sure to have your ata card drivers on a floppy. press f6 during the xp setup to install the drivers.

OK I got an error during XP that a file was missing from the driver disk for my controller. Went to highpoint support page, and there drivers had the file I was missing, copied the file on to the floppy, then boom everything was ok. Now I get to listing files to install or something like that and it says Please load disk "HPT302 UDMA/ATA133 Controller Driver Diskette" I try to put in the driver disk, but it poped that up again. So Now im thinking I have to make a disk with the name: HPT302 UDMA/ATA133 Controller Driver Diskette, I have win98 now, i go onto the A: drive and right click then format click lable disk to give this disk a name but it only allows 11charcters. I know there has to be a way I can put a longer name in for this disk.

LIGHTING BOLT JUST HIT MY BRAIN....... DISK NAME:HPT302

Just make sure that you're not simply selecting the A: drive as the driver source. The drivers for Windows are usually in a subfolder on the floppy.

I got everything working. ( Oh and there wasnt an option to pick a different subfolder, it simply said "Insert floppy disk named:" Then click enter when ready, or something like that I believe)

So what did you change to make it work this time as opposed to the last?

Sorry! I tend to babble and figure everyone knows what im talking about already.

The first problem was this: During Windows XP Installation, The Driver disk (For the Controller Card) was missing a .oem file, Since the file was missing, Windows XP couldnt locate my Hard Drive and it couldnt install windows.

FIX: (After connecting my old HD, and disconnecting the new one)Went to HighPoints webiste (Brand of the controller card) Downloaded there drivers, found the missing .oem file, and saved it to the driver diskette.

Second Problem: During Installation again, after the WindowsXP Installation program said: Listing files for Windows to copy (or something like that) It asks for the:HPT302 UDMA/ATA133 Controller Driver Diskette. It was looking for a diskette with the name:HPT302 (The name of the driver) Well since the diskette with the driver didnt have that name, Windows XP wouldnt read that diskette.

FIX: (After connecting my old HD, and disconnecting the new one) I Got a blank floppy disk, named it: HPT302. Put the drivers on it.

Now WindowsXP Loaded everything after that just fine.

(Note: This controller card had its own bios, so I didnt have to flash or mess with my original bios)
